Meet Jo-Hann

Man of many talents…

We wanted to get to know Jo-Hann a little better so we blind folded him, tied him to a chair, hooked him up to a polygraph machine and hit him with some seriously tough questions. Ok, not really, we just asked him a few things about himself. In fact, we didn’t even ask him face-to-face… we sent him an email. BORING. But let’s pretend anyway.

So Jo-Hann, where are you from and why are you here?

“I was born and raised in Malaysia. I came to Perth in 2013 to pursue an undergraduate degree in Psychology at Curtin University. I had the opportunity to go to UK but I chose Australia over UK because I don’t like being indoors and everyone tells me how terrible the weather is in UK.”

Good answer, we will let you live to the next question…

Exactly what were you doing before you started working at Grouch & Co?

“Before I started working at Grouch, I was a full time student with a strong passion for coffee and photography. I usually brew my own coffee at home every morning.”

OK, good enough but we will need proof of your brew skills at some stage

When did you first fall in love with coffee?

“Believe it or not, I never liked coffee the 19 years of my life in Malaysia, because it was bitter and artificially sweet. Yes, I’m talking about the local “kopi”. When I came to Australia in 2013, I got the opportunity to taste specialty coffee. I was blown away by the flavours found in coffee grown, processed and extracted by people who genuinely cared. And ever since then, I’ve been deeply in love with coffee – good coffee.”

We are starting to like you a lot more… we agree to take your blindfold off

What is your favourite brew method?

“I have most filter coffee devices but I love using the Chemex and that is what I brew with most mornings.”

What is your strangest talent … why should we let you live?

“Not quite something strange but I speak 3 languages and 3 Chinese dialects.”

Meh. 

What is your biggest pet-peeve?

“A two button suit jacket with both buttons done up. The top button is all you need!”

Um… OK?

Providing you survive this hostage ordeal, where do you see yourself in 10 years?

“I am a spontaneous person and I don’t plan my travels, let alone my future in 10 years. I guess my only hope now is to be somewhere deep in the coffee industry in 10 years.”

We were hoping you’d say “still working at Grouch & Co” but I suppose we will have to let you leave at some point.

Anything else we need to know before we untie you?

“I love filter coffee, I really do.”
